Archmere Takes Second in Boys and Girls State Tennis Tournament

Competing in the final round of the state tournament on May 26 at the University of Delaware Field House, the Auks captured two second-place team finishes and a pair of individual titles.

The No. 1 doubles team of Sam Wayne '16 and Spencer Lutz '16 capped their high school careers with a state title over Tatnall. The team, top-seeded duo at first doubles, earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory. Sam and Spencer started strong in the first set, winning the first three games, before the Hornets rebounded with the next two. Spencer served the winner in the set as Tatnall’s return sailed over the end line.

Freshman Robby Ward completed an unbeaten season for the Auks with a 6-4, 6-4 upset of Milford’s Colton Williamson in the first singles match. The freshman standout was 8-0 coming into the tournament. In the final game, Robby trailed, 15-30, as his opponent attempted to tie the set, but Robby capitalized on match point, his fifth, by placing a drop shot in the middle that Colton Williamson could not reach, earning the championship match.

On the girls’ side, the Archmere team also placed second overall. Archmere had girls in each of the three singles finals. Grace Dignazio '18, Abby Podolsky '17 and Alisa Yakovenko '18 each grabbed second place as the Lady Auks took home the overall second place trophy.
