Two Honey Bee Hives Installed on Archmere's Campus

On April 24th, students in the (not yet named) Bee Club helped to install two hives on the Archmere campus under the direction of Dan Houston, Director of Facilities and an experienced bee keeper. Bees are critical pollinators, but for a variety of environmental reasons, their populations have declined rapidly. The starter boxes each contained about 12,000 bees and 1 queen. Students are learning the fascinating story of these social insects with complex interactions. Archmere also has a native plant garden which is not only beneficial to these pollinators but also to the local bird populations.
