Brian Gilmore '88 and Elou, his Arson Dog, Present to the Forensic Science Class
Archmere class of 1988 graduate PFC Brian Gilmore#37 of the Upper Chichester Police Department and his partner, his accelerant detection K9 arson dog Elou, spoke to the Forensic Science class this week. Elou is part of the State Farm Arson Dog Program. She has been trained to sniff out minute traces of accelerants that may have been used to start a fire. These dogs go through extensive training before becoming certified accelerants detection canines. As Elou's handler, Brian Gilmore '88 is not only trained to investigate the causes of fires but is also responsible for providing community outreach programs and educational seminars on fire prevention and safety. Each year billions of dollars worth of property damage and hundreds of lives are lost due to the crime of arson.
Brian spoke to the Forensic Science class and led them through several scenarios and examples of how Elou works. He explained her routine, training, and several cases they work on together. Since 1993, the State Farm Arson Dog Program has put more than 380 dogs and their partners to work in 45 states, the District of Columbia and three Canadian provinces.
