Archmere Mock Trial Team Places Fourth in State

On February 23rd and 24th, Archmere's Mock Trial team competed in the State Competition at the Leonard Williams Justice Center. The goal of the Competition is to enhance students' citizenship skills. During the Mock Trial, students play the roles of the witnesses and attorneys in an assigned case. Students not only learn about the trial system, but they also develop critical thinking and public speaking skills. Archmere earned 10 gavels and the "A" team placed 4th overall. Alisa Yakovenko and Madison Larmore each won "Best Lawyer" gavels. Shreyas Parab, Emmett Bice, Halie Berkowitz and Madison Larmore each won "Best Witness" gavels. Madison Larmore also won the scholarship essay contest, "How Mock Trial Makes You a Better Citizen", receiving a $500 scholarship. Archmere's "B" team earned 17th place. Seth Bale won 2 gavels for "Best Witness" and Lauren Wilson and Palmer Anderson each won 1 gavel for "Best Lawyer".

There were four preliminary rounds on February 23 and 23, allowing each team the opportunity to present both sides of the case. The finals, held in the afternoon of Saturday, February 24, took place before a panel of Trial Court Judges, attorneys and members of the legal community including one Delaware Supreme Court Justice. Over 250 members of the judiciary and Delaware Bar act as legal advisors to the teams, and as judges and jurors for the competition.
