45 Archmere Students Compete in the State TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science) Competition

This year 45 Archmere students competed in the State TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science) Competition. The goal of TEAMS is to have students collaborate to develop practical and creative solutions to real world engineering problems. Each team competes in three areas: essay, multiple choice, and design/build.

In total, six Archmere teams competed at the 9/10 and the 11/12 levels. This year’s theme, ‘Engineering a Greener World,’ provided the basis for the 3 part competition. Each team submitted an essay identifying how a prominent building in our community could be modified to improve its energy efficiency. Students had to evaluate the current impact on the environment and recommend cost effective energy saving improvements. To prepare for the multiple choice section, students studied 8 scenarios which included Building a Better Environment through Green Initiatives and their related costs, along with an in-depth analysis of material properties. Students enjoyed the design/build phase of the competition the most. This year, students were tasked with building a structure out of straws, pipe cleaners, and paper clips that would support the weight of a tennis ball at the top. The towers were judged based on optimization of time, height, and cost. State winners will be invited to compete at the National TEAMS Competition this summer in Atlanta, Georgia.
