On Thursday, February 13th, juniors at Archmere Academy had the opportunity to attend various presentations during "Career Day". They learned about potential career paths -- from communications, accounting, and finance to physical therapy, aviation, and counseling. The sessions were run by Archmere alumni and friends to educate students about the many possible careers to pursue. I chose to attend presentations about marketing, graphic design, nursing, medicine, and law enforcement. In each session, I learned something new about the journey of choosing a career.
At the marketing session, I learned from speaker Paul Pomeroy ‘88 about the marketing process and the many different platforms and ways that it is used. He played various video advertisements that used different techniques to get the same general message across, which showed me the many different approaches and perspectives that marketing utilizes. Another session that I enjoyed was the graphic design presentation from artist Pat Higgins. His passion for illustration and design allowed him to be successful in his job, which inspired me to follow a career path that truly brings me joy and satisfaction.

I learned about the nursing profession from Allyssa Miller ‘09, who works at Christiana Care Hospital. Her presentation made me realize the value and importance of working to help, serve, and care for others. Next, I heard from Dr. Damian Andrisani ‘ 91, who is an orthopedic surgeon. His dedication and hard work allowed him to successfully complete medical school and become a surgeon. I was inspired not only by his perseverance and commitment to his medical studies, but also by his ability to balance a demanding job with his family life.

Lastly, I attended a presentation by Scott Duffey, a retired FBI agent, where I learned about the importance of adaptability and being open to change. He told the story of how he originally graduated from the seminary, and instead of becoming a priest, he joined law enforcement. I came to understand that my career path may change as I explore my interests, and I should learn to be open and willing to make changes in my future career.
