Monthly College Counseling Update: February 2021

Seniors

Regular decision application releases are occurring throughout the spring semester. Influenced by the pandemic, some schools are releasing earlier and some later than normal. We welcome conversations about final decisions, comparing aid and scholarship awards, and continuing to learn more about school options. We will be publishing a Spring Semester Task List for seniors in CIALFO this week to help guide them through the final months of their search.
On Monday, May 3rd, seniors are encouraged to wear a shirt from the college they’ve chosen to attend. Larger scale college celebrations will occur in mid-May to as not to disrupt AP testing. College Counseling is working with the Senior ExCo to plan a wonderful college celebration.

Juniors

We will begin meeting with junior families on March 1. These individual discussions will include: teacher recommendations, senior courses, testing, college list and priorities.
Schedule During a Free or Async Period

Prior to the final meeting or by March 10th, families are encouraged to engage with their Archmere junior and complete the Family Priority Exercise assigned to student during this week’s College Seminar class. We’re hoping this assignment will spark conversation and open dialogue about the college search process.

We had almost 25 parents join us for our first virtual College Coffee this week. We provided a ten minute power point presentation and the college admission and search landscape and took questions for about 45 minutes. Thank you to all parents who participated. We’re considering incorporating more of this type of programming into our offerings.

Freshman/Sophomores

Sophomore students will receive access to CIALFO (college search and application information system) in late April along with a short assignment to help them learn to navigate the system. Sophomores will also complete a personality and career inventory in CIALFO.

Just a notice or reminder to all sophomore and freshman families, this summer we will once again be offering optional family meetings for any family interested in asking questions about the college search and selection process. More information and a schedule will be out in late May/early June.
