Archmere Academy presents "Once Upon a Mattress"

The Archmere Academy Drama Club is proud to present its winter musical, the Broadway comedy classic, Once Upon a Mattress.  This hilarious Broadway musical originally starred comic legend Carol Burnett and premiered on Broadway in 1959, and the most recent Broadway revival (1996) featured Sarah Jessica Parker and was Tony-nominated for Best Revival of a Musical.
The musical is a farcical retelling of the Hans Christian Anderson story of "The Princess and the Pea".  The musical centers on the main storyline of Prince Dauntless (played by Rob Smith '22) who must get married in order for the rest of the kingdom to be allowed to get married as well.  But, his picky mother, the Queen (played by Sadie Walsh '22) has rejected thirteen possible suitors.  Sir Harry and Lady Larken (played by Jake Nowaczyk '22 and Amanda Treston '22) plot to bring a princess from the swamplands, Winnifred the Woebegone (played by Serena Martin '22), who is not, let us say, the most polished of princesses.  The mute King (played by Jack Maister '24), the Jester (played by Kaitlyn Kaulback '22), and the Minstrel (played by Ray Bellace '22) all take a liking to Winnifred and work behind the scenes to make Dauntless and Winnifred fall in love, despite the interference of the Queen and her loyal Wizard (played by Jack Roarty '24).  The plot, the songs, and the dancing are all callbacks to a classic Broadway comedy and the show is sure to be a night of fun for everyone!  Over forty students will be a part of the wonderfully talented cast and crew.  The set is designed and constructed by Rob Smith '22 and Serena Martin '22.  The costumes are designed by Ray Bellace '22.

The show will be performed in the Archmere Auditorium two weekends on Friday and Saturday, February 25–26 and March 4–5 at 7 pm.  We will be performing the play with advised COVID safety protocols in place, so masks will be worn by the cast and the audience at all times to ensure safety.  Tickets for the show will be available online at the Seat Yourself website and at the door. Tickets will be $15 for general admission and $10 for students and faculty of any school and senior citizens.  If you buy tickets ahead of time online, tickets will be slightly discounted.
