Kellyn Williams '26 Participates in Carnegie Mellon Summer Academy
This summer Kellyn Williams ’26 is participating in the Summer Academy of Math and Science (SAMS), one of two merit based and fully funded programs at Carnegie Mellon. The program aims to provide students from a variety of racial, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds with advanced STEM and research opportunities that would normally only be offered to CMU undergraduate students.
Kellyn is one of 60 out of 1,300 applicants admitted to the Summer Academy this year. She is taking undergraduate level courses in Biology and Game Theory (similar to Statistics), in addition to a chemistry based research lab project in Cosmetic Chemical Engineering. Per Kellyn, her “favorite project” thus far has been a forensics based murder mystery lab which combined her interests in the STEM and legal fields. She will also participate in a bacterial transformation lab with her biology class, a project similar to the process of making insulin for diabetic patients.
As part of the program, participants are privileged to attend several masterclass sessions with Carnegie Mellon and University of Pittsburgh professors, along with PhD students.
Kellyn was encouraged to apply by her advisors at TeenSHARP, an outside college counseling program in which she is a member. She also received recommendations from Ms. Witte, Mrs. Fowler, and Ms. Dove.
