Archmere Students Compete in American Mathematics Competition
In February, forty nine Archmere students participated in the American Mathematics Competition (AMC) by taking a math test (non-calculator) focused on improving the problem solving skills of our nation’s students. Students who score in the top 2.5% on the AMC-10 test and in the top 5.0% on the AMC-12 test are invited to compete at the next level of the competition. Nicholas Zhu ’22 and Andrew Shi ’20 were in this group and have been invited to take the American Invitational Mathematics Exam (AIME) in March. The AIME is a three hour, fifteen question exam where each answer is an integer number between 0 and 999. Congratulations to both students on this accomplishment!
Speech and Debate Team Set to Compete at National Level
The Speech and Debate team competed at Cab Calloway last weekend for the opportunity to represent Delaware at the NCFL's (National Catholic Forensic League's) National Championship in Milwaukee over Memorial Day weekend. Five of the seven Archmere students competing earned that right:

Seth Bale '19: Oratorical Declamation (performing a speech given by another person) (Seth is also the alternate in Oral Interpretation of Literature)

Monica Onishi '19 and Rohit Mathur '21: Duo Interpretation of Literature
Owen Phillips '21: Student Congress (parliamentary debate--as the alternate in Lincoln-Douglas debate, Owen moves on in Congress)
Their next competition is the First State Speech and Debate Championships, held on April 13th in Middletown, DE.
AP World History Creates Caricatures
Last week, Bill McGowan's AP World History class created "Funko Pop" Caricatures of late 18th/early 19th century historical figures. The students researched and developed their caricatures, and were given a blank template to use to develop their ideas. In addition, they had to design two other important people that their caricature would be associated with and provide a brief biography of their historical figures.

Record Number of Archmere Students Compete in TEAMS Competition
This month a record 51 Archmere students on 7 different teams competed in the Annual State TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science) Competition, held at Archmere on March 5th. TEAMS is a STEM Competition where students work together to solve engineering challenges in creative ways by applying their math and science knowledge. This year’s theme, ‘Engineering the Brain', led students to write an essay on a way to improve the quality of human life through artificial intelligence. A student favorite, the design/build part of the competition, had students devise a simulated mechanism to rescue a bear that had fallen into a hole. Our students are looking forward to an invitation to the National TEAMS Competition in Washington D.C. this June.

Interdisciplinary Field Trip to the Delaware Art Museum
On Wednesday, March 20th, the Archmere Women Writers, Short Stories, Social Justice, Photography and the American Civil Rights classes all took an interdisciplinary Social Justice in Art field trip to the Delaware Art Museum. The students were supervised by their respective class instructors: Mrs. Karen Linton, Mr. Tim Dougherty, Ms. Kathryn Hudson, Mr. Tom Mengers, Ms. Kate Huffman and Mr. Bill McGowan.

Lisa Blunt-Rochester Keynote Speaker at Archmere's Model UN Conference (AUKMUN)
On March 16th, Archmere hosted its annual Model UN Conference (AUKMUN). Model United Nations is a student simulation of the proceedings of the United Nations. Roughly 100 students listened to House of Representative’s Lisa Blunt-Rochester explain what motivated her to run for office and get elected as the first black woman in Delaware during the conference's Opening Ceremonies.
Mental Health Club Kicks Off Compliment Chain
On Tuesday, March 26th, the Mental Health Club held a student-run assembly to educate about mental health issues and encourage the importance of seeking help. They concluded the assembly by kicking off a compliment chain. After the assembly, each student received a handwritten personalized compliment from a teacher. Students also received two note cards to pay it forward and keep the chain going. We hope the compliment chain will continue to spread positivity and caring throughout our school this week!
