Winter Athletes, Coaches Earn Conference, All-State Awards

Congratulations to all of our winter athletes who were named to the Diamond State All-Conference teams and the All-State teams. Archmere team accolades also include the Diamond State Athletic Conference Championship title for the boys basketball team and Diamond State Conference Coach of the Year for boys basketball coach Bill Ludlow. 
In addition, a highlight from the girls basketball season included a huge “buzzer beater” win over Ursuline in a regular season game, the first Raider defeat in recent history. The swim team sent eight swimmers to the State Meet, with the girls team placing 11th overall with only four swimmers competing. The wrestling team had six wrestlers finish in the top 8 in their weight class, including three that qualified for the DIAA Individual Championship Tournament. The Archmere indoor track and field team competed in several big meets this winter, racking up personal best times and setting several school records throughout the season.

In the DIAA State Championship swim meet, Nate Bustard ’23 placed 9th in the 50 Free and 13th in the 100 Free. The 200 Free Relay of Nate Bustard ‘23, Logan Bustard ‘25, Quinn McCormick ’25 and Andrew Matej ‘24 placed 12th. 
 
The girls team finished 11th overall, led by sophomore Elizabeth Maher’s 9th place in the 50 Free and 7th place finish in the 100 Free. The 200 Medley Relay of Kendall Hanna ‘25, Annamaria DeCamp ‘23, Kathryn Pyne ‘25, and Elizabeth Maher ’24 swam to 10th place, while the same swimmers improved their time and placed 8th in the 200 Free Relay. Annamaria DeCamp ’23 placed 12th in the 500 Free with a significant drop in her time from 5:37 at prelims to 5:33 in finals. Kathryn Pyne ’25 made waves as a 9th grader, placing 14th in the 100 Breaststroke.

The girls basketball team finished the regular season with a record of 12-7. Season highlights included a thrilling buzzer beater win to defeat Ursuline for the first time in several years. The team put together a five - game winning streak highlighted by a victory over Catholic rival, Padua. The girls once again earned a berth in the 2022 DIAA State Basketball Tournament, where they defeated Seaford at home in front of a spirited Archmere crowd.

Diamond State Conference Coach of the Year: Bill Ludlow
 
The boys basketball team finished the regular season with a record of 12-6. For the second year in a row, the team was crowned Diamond State Athletic Conference Champions. Season highlights included a six - game winning streak that featured wins over St. Elizabeth and St. Mark’s, and a win over Indian River in the SL 24 Unlocke the Light game at the Sixers Fieldhouse. The Auks earned a berth in the 2022 DIAA State Basketball Tournament.

Wrestling
Brandon Carr ’25 – 2nd Team All-State
 
Despite some key injuries, the Archmere Wrestling team was very competitive on the mats this winter. The team had victories over Newark Charter and St. Elizabeth. They capped their regular season with a victory over St. Andrew’s.
 
In the postseason, the team finished 9th out of 18 teams at the 2022 DIAA Independent Qualifier. Six wrestlers finished in the top 8 in their weight class, including three that qualified for the DIAA Individual Championship Tournament. Freshman Brandon Carr and senior co-captains Luke Kryka and Conor France earned the opportunity to compete for a State Championship. Brandon Carr finished 2nd at 126 pounds. He would go on to finish 2nd at the State Championship. Luke Kryka finished 8th at 138 pounds, earning his second career appearance in the State Championship Tournament. Senior Conor France finished 4th at 220 pounds and made his third career appearance in the State Championship Tournament. Conor finished 7th overall at states.

Indoor Track and Field
Despite training outdoors in frigid temperatures, both the boys and girls indoor track and field teams had successful seasons. Several runners and field eventers qualified for the DIAA State Championships, held at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
 
The girls team fought their way to an 8th place finish - the highest finish ever for the team at the state meet. There were a number of contributors for the girls, including a 3rd place finish by Jane Willin '24 in the high jump, 6th and 7th place finishes in shot put for Alanah Weaver '23 and Chichi Emedoh '23, respectively. Maddie Priest '24 took home 6th in the 800m and 7th in the 1600m. The girls 4x200m relay team of Onyi Kenine '22, Gabby Henry '23, Simi Edeki '22, and Ellie DiCarlo '24 earned a 5th place finish in a school record time. The 4x400m relay team of Jules Witherell '24, Ryan Vitola '23, Maddie Priest '23, and Ellie DiCarlo '24 also earned a school record with an 8th place finish. Jules Witherell '24 took down a school record in the 400m as well.

The boys team had their own success with contributions from Kenny Adenusi '22, who placed 8th in the 55m dash. The boys 4x200m relay team of Kenny Adenusi '22, Gavin Lee '24, Alex Im '22, and Dylan Addo '22 earned a 6th place finish with a school record time. The boys 4x400m relay team of Alex Im '22, Jack Chesman '25, Colin Arcari '24 and Gavin Lee '24 broke their own school record. Finally, Matt Guariano '24 broke the school record in 55m hurdles and Alex Im '22 broke his own school record in the 400m dash.
