Juniors Maya Shah and Philip Himmelreich Named LLS Students of the Year

On Thursday, March 10, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Eastern PA-DE Region announced the 2022 Delaware Students of the Year winners, Maya Shah and Philip Himmelreich, both Archmere juniors. They led the team, It’s In Our Blood, raising $162,800 during their 7-week fundraising endeavor. This is the most funds ever raised for LLS by a student-led team in the state of Delaware.
Philip and Maya each have a personal connection to cancer that inspired them to get involved, and they led their team, It’s In Our Blood, comprised of students from various schools. The team ran an extensive fundraising campaign involving multiple community-wide fundraising events, raffles, personal outreach and mission focused awareness through social media in order to connect with everyone in their network. For these community-wide efforts, Maya and Philip also received the LLS Christian Malmgren Award for Mission Integration. Their fundraising also awarded them three Hero Awards, linking three research grants to their campaign’s three heroes: Jacqueline Himmelreich, Jan White and Christian Malmgren.

Archmere is also very proud to announce that Students of the Year Runner Up was awarded to the team, Fight With All Your Might, led by juniors Gianni Capano, Holly Hayes, and Niha Mukkamala. Fight With All Your Might raised $60,816, also awarding them a Hero Award. Their team ran in honor of Holly’s cousin, Tara, Christian Malmgren, and Nina’s aunt, Swetha. Fight With All Your Might team member, Drew Clark ‘23, was named LLS Team Member of the Year for the most funds raised of any individual team member in Delaware.

Together with Archmere team Auks4aCure, led by juniors Alanah Weaver and Sophia Tobin, who ran their campaign in honor of Alanah’s aunt, Alanah’s grandfather, Sophia’s dad, and Christian Malmgren, the three Archmere teams raised a grand total of $268,183 — more than half of Delaware’s total funds raised for LLS.

The LLS Students of the Year fundraising campaign is a seven-week philanthropic leadership development program that fosters professional skills such as entrepreneurship, marketing, and project management to raise funds for LLS. Funding through Students of the Year is used to research lifesaving therapies, provide free blood cancer education and support for patients, and national and local advocacy efforts.

Amazing job to all participants who joined together to fight for something bigger than themselves!
