Girls Basketball Opens Season With Comeback Win Over Appoquinimink

After trailing much of the night, the Archmere girls basketball team pulled out a 48-43 victory over Appoquinimink on December 5 in their season opener. Played in the Moglia Fieldhouse, the game was a thrilling back and forth battle from the beginning. Allison Lengkeek '23 hit the only three-pointer for Archmere in the first quarter, keeping them in the game but still trailing 14-12.
Lucy Oliver '24 and Sara Denning '23 successfully hit their shots to keep the team in the game throughout the second quarter. By halftime, the Auks trailed 25-20. Towards the end of the third quarter, Lucy Oliver again found her stride to cut the lead to 35-33. With the game tied at 43 in the fourth quarter and a clear lane for a basket that would’ve given the Jaguars the lead, senior forward Sara Denning closed that lane quickly with a blocked shot, sparking Archmere to a 48-43 win in their season-opening contest.

Per the Dialog:

"The Auks started the fourth quarter on a 7-2 run to lead, 40-37, only to watch Reed answer with a deep triple to tie the game. After Archmere took another three-point lead, Martin hit a three to tie it again at 43 with two minutes left. The Auks would score the last five points of the game from the foul line. Lydia Scarpaci made the final four free throws to seal the home win for the Auks."

In total, Lucy Oliver had 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Auks, while Sara Denning added 9.
