College Counseling Hosts "Why Engineering" Program

On Wednesday, March 13th, the Archmere College Counseling Office hosted an informative "Why Engineering" night. Led by Director of College Counseling Mr. Chris Boehm, a panel of representatives from Georgia Tech, Swarthmore, the University of Delaware and the infrastructure consulting company, AECOM, shared their knowledge with current Archmere students and their families. Guests gained a better understanding of a career in numerous engineering fields, learned about the best high school preparation for college engineering programs, and were offered explanations to the differences and similarities between STEM and STEAM.

Panelists also included Riley McAvinue '20, University of Delaware Chemical Engineering major, and current parent LaShanda Korley, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor at the University of Delaware Departments of Materials Science and Engineering, and Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. Per Chris Boehm, common themes discussed were examples of different types of problems that engineers solve (that may not always deal with math and science), engineers will fail, engineers are curious, engineers work hard and reap the rewards from their invested time, and engineers learn how to learn.
