Art Students Participate in The Memory Project

The Archmere Academy Watercolor and Acrylic class, under the supervision of Mr. Terry Newitt, along with the Introduction to Design class, under the supervision of Ms. Maia Palmer, have been working on a charity art project, “The Memory Project”. The Memory Project invites art teachers and their students to create and donate portraits to youth around the world who have faced substantial challenges, such as neglect, abuse, loss of parents, violence, and extreme poverty. These portraits help the children feel valued and important, to know that many people care about their well being, and to act as meaningful pieces of personal history in the future. For the art students, this is an opportunity to creatively practice kindness and global awareness. Many of these works will also be on display at the Fine Arts Festival this weekend.

The Introduction to Design class will be working on portraits of children in Bolivia, and the Acrylic class will be working on portraits of children in Uganda. Once the students create the portraits, they are hand-delivered to the kids by staff members of The Memory Project, who aims to have several different portraits for each child, created by different art students and based on several poses. The staff will also create a video of each delivery to share with all of the art students and teachers involved. Since 2004, The Memory Project has created more than 100,000 portraits for children in 43 countries.

The following statement is information sent to Archmere about the students in Bolivia:

"Most children in Bolivia are doing well. However, as in all countries, some children are facing substantial challenges, and each child who will receive these portraits has a different story. The children you see in these photos all live in a particularly challenged area on the outskirts of a city, where many families live in one room homes with dirt floors and walls of sheet metal. For all of them, receiving the portraits will be truly unique, and you will be touching their lives in a very special way. We truly thank you for your efforts."
