Seniors Place Second in the Nation, Natasha Gengler '18 Earns Perfect Score at WordWright Challenge

In this year's third meet of the WordWright Challenge, two teams of Archmere students won high honors. Held in February, the Challenge, a national competition for high school students requiring close reading and analysis of prose and poetry, included 647 school teams from across the country. Archmere's twelfth graders placed second in the nation and the eleventh graders placed eighth in the nation.

Students who won high individual honors in the meet included senior Natasha Gengler who was one of only three twelfth graders in the entire country (out of 18,621) who earned a perfect score. Others who achieved outstanding results in the meet included juniors Emily Lugg, Rebecca DeHeer, Brady Dalton, and Parker Vaikili; and seniors Annie Martino, Emily Rosato, Grace Zhang, David Bondi, Amanda Denning, Grace Hogan, and Alisa Yakovenko.

More than 65,000 students from 48 states across the country participated in the meet. Archmere English Department Chair and Teacher, Stephen Klinge supervised the students. The texts for the third WordWright meet this year were a pair of poems by Dave Smith and William Carols Williams. The students will participate in one more meet over the coming months, and medal and certificates will be awarded in June to those who have achieved and/or progressed the most in the course of the year.
