Sophia Silverman ’28 Awarded National Gold Medal for Fashion Design
The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, the nonprofit organization that presents the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, has recognized tenth grader Sophia Silverman ’28 with a National Gold Medal in the Fashion Design category for an illuminated dress entitled “Tableware Exoskeleton” she constructed out of paper plates.
In 2026, over 110,000 students entered more than 335,000 original works of art and writing to the 2026 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, and 650 works were awarded National Gold Medals. Gold Medals are determined by some of the foremost leaders in the visual arts for excellence in originality, skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.
Since 1923, the Scholastic Art Awards have celebrated teen artists and writers from across the country. Sophia is now part of that legacy, joining the ranks of notable alumni including Tschabalala Self, Stephen King, Kay WalkingStick, Charles White, Joyce Carol Oates, Amanda Gorman, and Andy Warhol—all of whom won Scholastic Awards when they were teens.
Sophia’s Fashion design will be published in the online galleries at artandwriting.org and featured in Yearbook 2026, a companion to our annual art and writing anthologies that feature selections of works by National Medalists. Sophia and her art teacher, Stephanie Silverman ’00, will be honored at the National Scholastics ceremony during National Scholastics Awards Week in New York City, including the National Ceremony at Carnegie Hall on June 10th.
