Chinwendu Emedoh '23 Addresses UN on Girl Empowerment
This year, Chinwendu Emedoh '23 addressed the United Nations on October 11 to virtually to share not only why it's important to cultivate girl leaders, but also how to take action so girls can empower themselves.
Every year, the United Nations addresses the challenges girls face and promotes girls' empowerment on October 11 as part of International Day of the Girl Child. This year's theme, "My Voice, Our Equal Future," focuses on the changes adolescent girls want to see as they lead change around the world.
This year, Archmere's own Chinwendu Emedoh '23 addressed the United Nations virtually to share not only why it's important to cultivate girl leaders, but also how to take action so girls can empower themselves. Her speech was also part of the global launch of YOUTHGETHER.

I think the most challenging part for me doing the speech virtual was being able to give my entire speech. This particular event had time limitations for each group of speakers, so I was nervous about not being able to finish on time or finishing too early. While I was speaking I noticed that I wouldn't have enough time to present my entire speech so I decided to skip to the most important part of the speech and finish from there. I was also getting really nervous before presenting, even though it was virtual. I guess no matter the event is being hosted, there will always be some kind of challenge to deal with.

Empowering girls is one of the most important things that a girl should experience. Female empowerment is seen as a human rights issue and it really shouldn't have to be like that because women deserve to have what every man has. Women shouldn't be denied their basic human rights in all parts of the world. Women need to be educated because they could achieve what others couldn't. Empowering girls is one of the smartest things that people can do to promote a healthier and more prosperous world especially in third world countries where girls are impacted the most. For example, the issue of early marriages, girls not given the same educational opportunities, girls only being allowed to work in the home, the issue of female genital mutilation, and many other things. It's also the right thing to do because every girl has the right to be in charge of her future and her fate, and the world needs to protect her rights and promote her well-being.

Youthgether is an initiative that was developed by a group of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) which includes the Sub-Saharan Open University in Nigeria and these NGOs engaged my family's foundation called the Barr Juni and Irene Menakaya Foundation to be involved in the initiative to engage the world youth. The foundation focuses on building community service and empowerment in less privileged local communities across the world and it is affiliated with the United Nations.
