Science Olympiad Team Earns Multiple Top 10 Finishes

Saturday, March 7, was a proud day for Archmere Academy’s science program as 26 students represented the school at the Delaware Science Olympiad Tournament.
Students spent months preparing for the competition, dedicating hours to independent research, studying scientific concepts, and practicing for both written exams and hands-on performance challenges. Events at the tournament test a wide range of scientific disciplines, from engineering design to problem-solving challenges such as cipher decoding.

For Archmere faculty moderator and science teacher Mr. Jim Haine, assisting the program for the first time, the level of student initiative stood out. “I was struck by how much independent research and practice the students completed,” he said. “They demonstrated the skills we work on in classroom labs while also showing the curiosity to explore far beyond our curriculum.”

Archmere students performed strongly in a competitive field of 44 teams and more than 500 participants from across Delaware. The school earned top-10 finishes in 13 of the tournament’s 25 events, an impressive achievement for the program.

Archmere entered two teams in the competition:

Green Team (#25)
  • 15 students, primarily juniors and seniors
  • Competed in 20 of the 24 events
  • Finished 12th overall out of 44 teams
White Team (#26)
  • 11 students in grades 9–11
  • Competed in 15 of the 24 events
  • Finished 23rd overall out of 44 teams
Each Science Olympiad team can include up to 15 students, and many schools bring multiple teams to compete. Some programs schedule practice during the school day, hold tryouts, or concentrate resources on a single top-ranked team to maximize scoring.

Archmere’s approach focused on participation, learning, and teamwork. Several students volunteered to take on additional events to help strengthen the team’s overall performance. Mr. Haine added, “Our students balanced competitive goals with genuine curiosity. They were excited to investigate science, challenge themselves, and enjoy learning something new.”

With strong results and enthusiastic participation, the tournament marked a successful step forward for Archmere’s growing Science Olympiad program.
