Girls' Cross Country Wins Joe O'Neill Invitational
For the first time in the meet’s 26 years, Archmere won the Varsity Girls race at the Joe O’Neill Invitational, held at Bellevue State park. In addition, the JV girls also won the team title, led by first place finish Allison Perpiglia. Both the Varsity and JV boys took 5th overall. In total, the Archmere cross country team recorded 41 new 5k PR’s! More than 1,000 athletes from more than 40 teams competed at the Invitational on October 17th.
Archmere placed five runners in the top 36 finishers and seven in the top 53 – Riley Horsey (4th with a time of 19:06.10), Alaina Thomas (eighth), Molly Felice (14th), Ella Taggart (20th), Lila Matthews (36th), Cecilia DePalma (37th) and Greta Webster (53rd) – to win the team title with 81 points.
The Joe O'Neill Invitational was the first big race on the new 5-kilometer cross-country course at Bellevue. The most obvious differences compared with previous versions are the start and finish areas.
The New Castle County Championships will move from their longtime home at Winterthur Estate to Bellevue on November 1st.
