This past weekend, Archmere Academy students took part in the annual Youth in Government (YIG) Conference in Dover, Delaware, an immersive three-day program sponsored by the YMCA that brings together student delegations from across the state. Participants step into the roles of government officials, simulating the legislative, judicial, and executive branches while working in Delaware’s actual government buildings.
Students had the unique opportunity to sit in the seats of real lawmakers and judges, gaining firsthand experience in the democratic process. The conference also featured visits from Delaware Governor Matt Meyer and Chief Justice Collins J. Seitz, Jr., who met with and spoke to delegates.
Archmere was well represented across all branches of government, with students serving as legislators, attorneys, justices, lobbyists, and members of the press corps. This year’s delegation included Olivia Benson, Ryan Carr, Eric Chen, Audrey Curtis, Athena Dong, Ethan Flores, Iyanna Flores, Reagan Gardiner, Alexis Hsu, Juliana Maceda, Adie Vicario, Kathrine Wang, Rebecca Wang, and Selena Yang.
Several students earned prestigious leadership roles. Ethan Flores served as Chief Lobbyist for the 2026 conference, while Iyanna Flores was elected to the same position for 2027. Selena Yang led the press corps as Editor-in-Chief, and Olivia Benson served as an Associate Justice. Rebecca Wang and Ethan Flores also took on significant responsibilities as Youth Delegation Leaders, organizing and preparing the group for the conference.
Archmere students also received numerous awards for their outstanding performance. Juliana Maceda was named Outstanding Attorney, and Rebecca Wang earned the title of Outstanding Justice. Both were selected to participate in the final Judicial Showcase. Reagan Gardiner was recognized as one of two Outstanding First-Year Judicial delegates, notably arguing both sides of her case independently. In the legislative branch, Alexis Hsu received an Outstanding Legislation award, and Audrey Curtis successfully guided her bill, the “Student Athlete Hydration & Heat Safety Act,” through both chambers, where it was signed into law by the Youth Governor.
In addition, several students were selected to advance to national-level conferences. Juliana Maceda will attend the National Judicial Competition, with Reagan Gardiner named as an alternate. Ethan Flores was selected for the Conference on National Affairs, and Selena Yang was chosen as an alternate.
The conference, known for its fast pace and demanding schedule, proved both challenging and rewarding for all involved. Special recognition goes to first-time participants Eric Chen, Ryan Carr, Athena Dong, Reagan Gardiner, and Alexis Hsu for their contributions to this year’s successful delegation.
Overall, the weekend was a memorable experience filled with learning, leadership, and achievement, highlighting Archmere’s strong presence in the Youth in Government program.
